NHL Stanley Cup Playoff Update

We are almost a month into the Stanley cup playoffs and the game have been exciting and fun to watch. With everything going on in the world it is good to have Hockey to watch to get a way from everything for a few hours.

With the first round over and half the teams eliminated we are down to the final eight. They have all been battling to advance to the next round.

Round 2 Match-Ups

NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs

In the Second round there are 4 match ups:

  • Colorado Avalanche vs. Dallas Stars
  • Vancouver Canucks vs, Las Vegas Golden Knights
  • Boston Bruins vs. Tampa Bay Lightning
  • New York Islanders vs. Philadelphia Flyers

The Philadelphia Flyers and the Las Vegas Golden Knights were the favorites to win the Stanley cup heading into the first round. We will see what happens as the playoffs continue.

A Look Ahead to Game 6

Dallas Stars vs. Colorado Avalanche (3-2)

The Avalanche took the win yesterday against the Stars, forcing a game 6. The Stars are in control of the series with a 3-2 lead. Colorado put up 5 goals in the first period putting the Stars in a huge hole. The offense was provided by 5 different players. Andre Burakovsky scored twice for the Avalanche. The Stars would put up 3 goals but it wasn’t enough to put the series away. The Dallas Stars will look to close out the series against the Avalanche in game 6.

New York Islanders vs. Philadelphia Flyers (3-2)

Coming into game 5 the Islanders were up 3-1 in the series hoping to put away the Flyers. Mathew Barzal put the Islanders on the board early. The Flyers would respond by putting 3 in to go up 3-1. Brock Nelson and Derick Brassard would score to tie up the game in the third sending the game into overtime. Unfortunately for the Islanders it would be Scott Laughton who would score the game winner for the once favorites Flyers. The Islanders will see if the can pull it together after a tough loss and knock off the Flyers.

Vancouver Canucks vs. Las Vegas Golden Knights

Game five was a tough battle for both teams. It was The Canucks who were able to defeat the Stanley Cup favorites the Golden Knights. Shea Theodore put the Golden Knights on the board first. Brock Boeser and Elias Pettersson were able to score to give Vancouver a 2-1 victory. Demko was able to fend off a barrage of shots in his first career playoff start by saving 42 of 43 shots put on him. The Golden Knights will look to put away the Canucks in Game 6.

Tampa Bay Lightning vs. Boston Bruins

The Boston Bruins were one of the favorites of winning the Stanley cup coming into the season. The Tampa Bay Lightning made easy work of them defeating them in 5 games. Tampa Bay won game 5 in a double overtime. It was Victor Hedman who scored the game winner for the Lightning. Andrei Vasilevskiy stopped 45 of the 47 shots faced while Halak saved 32 of 35. Halak assumed goal tending duties when Rask opted out of the season.

Playoffs and Players Mental State

NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs

This is the most unique playoffs that the NHL has ever had. This is mainly due to the conditions that the players and games are put under. While they have high end accommodations where the have spent over a month at the arena complex in Edmonton some are speaking about how they are starting to go through metal fatigue. Coach Rick Bowness stated that everyone is making the best of it.

Players are having their mental toughness tested. They have to get tested daily, the play their game them back to their rooms, the lack of freedoms, and not being allowed to see their families. Bowness stated that it’s not as easy as people think living like this. Many feel like they are in a prison. While the players know that it is their job and they are getting paid to play, the mental aspect of it all is starting to take effect. Some are implying that it is not just the talent on the teams that will determine the outcome of the Stanley cup it is also the mental toughness.

NHL Playoffs

I am glad to have sports back especially the NHL. To me there is nothing as exciting as the NHL Playoffs. Although it does lose some excitement without the fans in attendance but the play has been on the same level as before. You can see the players are happy to be out there.

As a New York Rangers fan it stunk to have them bounced out right away I guess the good that came out of it was that they will receive the first pick overall in the draft. They have their choice as to who they want to help build their franchise. Some of the young players looked good and it should be an exciting season for them next year.

1st Round Match-Ups

NHL Playoffs

In the first round there are 8 match ups:

  • Columbus Blue Jackets vs. Tampa Bay Lightning
  • Calgary Flames vs. Dallas Stars
  • Chicago Blackhawks vs, Las Vegas Golden Knights
  • Carolina Hurricanes vs. Boston Bruins
  • New York Islanders vs. Washington Capitals
  • Arizona Coyotes vs. Colorado Avalanche
  • Montreal Canadians vs. Philadelphia Flyers
  • Vancouver Canucks vs. St. Louis Blues

As of right now the Philadelphia Flyers and the Las Vegas Golden Knights are the favorites to win the Stanley cup heading into the first round. Originally it was the Boston Bruins who were the favorites heading into the season. Anything can happen during the playoffs and there is a long road ahead.

Breaking News

Tuukka Rask Boston Bruins goalie opts out of NHL playoffs

Less than 2 hours before the Bruins play the Hurricanes in game 3 Rask opted out of the season. A statement was released on Twitter with the statement

“I want to be with my teammates competing, but at this moment there are things more important than hockey in my life, and that is being with my family,” Rask said in a statement. “I want to thank the Bruins and my teammates for their support and wish them success.”

The Bruins have announced that Jaroslav Halak will take over as the starting goalie for the Bruins. The Bruins are currently trailing 2-1.

A Look Ahead to Game 3

Arizona Coyotes vs. Colorado Avalanche (0-2)

The Avalanche took a loss yesterday from the Coyotes, but still hold a 2-1 series lead. Coyotes goaltender Kuemper stopped 49 shots and the Coyotes held on to beat the Avalanche 4-2 on Saturday in Game 3 of the Stanley Cup first round playoffs. The Coyotes were in control in game 3 right from Derek Stepan’s first-period goal.

Montreal Canadians vs. Philadelphia Flyers (1-1)

The Canadians gave the Flyers a beating in game two and tied the series up 1-1. They were without head coach Claude Julien. Goaltender Carey Price stopped all 30 shots he faced for his second shutout of the playoffs. Jesperi Kotkaniemi and Tomas Tatar scored two goals each for Montreal. The Flyers coach Alain Vigneault was angry with the Canadians for being up 5-0 and putting their best line on the power play. Both teams look to take the lead in the series.

Vancouver Canucks vs. St. Louis Blues

The Vancouver Canucks lead the Reigning champs 2-0. The St. Louis Blues look to get on the board tonight and get back into the series. St. Louis was able to overcome a 3-1 deficit in the third period to tie the game with 8 seconds left. Look for the Blues to come out hard in game three and avoid the dreaded 3-0.

New York Islanders vs. Washington Capitals

The Islanders took a 3-0 series lead against the Capitals. Mathew Barzal scored 4:28 into overtime, lifting the New York Islanders to a 2-1 win over the Washington Capitals. Right now it looks as thought the Islanders will take the series and sent the Capitals packing. That is unless the Capitals have an enormous come back.

Calgary Flames vs. Dallas Stars

Calgary was up 2-1 on the Dallas Stars. Calgary’s Sam Bennett scored twice but it wasn’t enough to take a 3-1 series lead. Dallas was able to even the series up at 2-2 by a score of 5-4 in overtime. The Dallas Stars offense was headed by Pavelski who was signed as a free agent last off-season. He recorded Dallas’ first playoff hat trick since the franchise moved from Minnesota in 1993. Both teams look to take the series lead in game 5.

Carolina Hurricanes vs. Boston Bruins

Carolina was up in the series 2-0. In the first game since Rask opted out of the remainder of the season the Bruins emerged with a 3-1 victory. Jaroslav Halak stopped 29 shots after starting replacing Rask. It was Marchand who ended Carolina’s comeback chances by putting the puck into the empty net with 30.9 seconds left. Game 4 is Monday night where the Bruins looked to tie the series at 2-2.

Chicago Blackhawks vs, Las Vegas Golden Knights

The Las Vegas Golden Knights took a 3-0 series lead over the Chicago Blackhawks. Marc-Andre Fleury stopped 26 shots and William Karlsson and Patrick Brown scored for the Golden Knights to defeat the Blackhawks 2-1. Chicago’s power play has been lack luster going 0 for 4 on the power play and is 1 for 8 in the series. The Blackhawks will look to stay alive in game 4.

Columbus Blue Jackets vs. Tampa Bay Lightning

After having the series tied at 1-1 the Tampa Bay Lightning was able to take a 2-1 lead. Andrei Vasilevskiy made 16 saves and offense was provided by Lex Killorn, Brayden Point and Victor Hedman. The Blue Jackets had some opportunities that they were unable to capitalize on. Tampa Bay out shot Columbus 34-17. The Lightning will look to go up 3-1 Monday.

Who is Your Favorite Athlete? and Why?

Favorite AthleteMany people have a favorite athlete and some more than one. You may have a favorite athlete overall or you might have a favorite athlete in each sport. People even have a favorite athlete of all time.

There are many reasons as to why people choose an athlete over another. Maybe they are the best player on your favorite team or maybe they play the same sport and position as you. No matter the reason your favorite athlete is yours for that reason.

What is your favorite team(s)?

Most of the time a people favorite team is in their home state. There are times however, where this is not the case. Not every state has a baseball, football, hockey, or basketball team. People will then venture out to find another team to root for. People like NCAA teams all over the country for the same reasons or maybe because they or they know someone who went there.

Some people may choose to root for a certain team because of a certain player on that team. This was the case with me. I am from New York, and my favorite teams are the Knicks, Rangers, and Yankees. When it comes to football it is the only sport where I am not a NY fan. I will root for the Jets, but my favorite team is the Dallas Cowboys. This came about when I was about 8 years old. My cousins lived in Texas and when they came to visit they brought me up a Herschel Walker jersey. I wore it all the time and from there on I was a fan of the Cowboys.

I became a fan of the New York Yankees and the New York Knicks mainly because of my dad. He was a fan since he was a kid. We would watch games on TV and go to the stadium together when I was younger, and we still do today with my boys.

Hockey was not a sport that was watched much in my house. I got into hockey with friends we would play roller hockey every day in the street. I started watching the Rangers and I have been a fan for the past 30 plus years.

I am not really a fan of any one team in college sports. I will usually just watch the big name schools if they are on TV during a tournament or a big game.

Who are your favorite athletes on your favorite teams?

New York Rangers

People have a favorite athlete and some have favorite athletes on all of their favorite teams. I have had several favorite athletes on various teams. Players change mainly due to players retiring, but I still have one favorite overall through the decades.

Growing up watching the New York Yankees my favorite player was Dave Winfield. After Dave Winfield my next favorite player was Mariano Rivera. I think everyone knows of Mariano’s talent and how he was as a person. He was one of the nicest people to meet and I had the chance of doing so at an event in New York City. On the current Yankees team is Gleyber Torres. He can play the field well and he is an excellent hitter.

My favorite player on the New York Knicks when I was younger was Charles Oakley. He was not much of a scorer but his defense and tenacity for the game was like no other. He would battle anyone any night and he always gave his all.

Once the Oakley era ended my favorite player became Allan Houston. After that it was hit or miss with the Knicks. Many players were not long term and there was a lot of turn over. Now I would say as of right now my favorite player is RJ Barrett. He is a young player with a ton of upside. I would love to see RJ take more of a lead role in the Knicks offense going forward.

Even though many people do not follow hockey, I think it is a great sport to watch especially in person. The New York Rangers had many great players over their existence. My favorite player on the Rangers was Brian Leetch. He played defense for the Rangers from 1987-2005. He was a tough smart defender who was also a good offensive player. I was a bit disappointed when he left the Rangers and signed with the rival Boston Bruins.

After Leetch left the Rangers my favorite player became Henrik Lundqvist. When he came into the league he was a fun and exciting goalie to watch. He would make unbelievable saves. Unfortunately he was unable to win a Stanley cup with the Rangers.

The Dallas Cowboys have a long history of great players as do most sport teams. The first player I liked on the team was Herschel Walker. He was an explosive player and a work horse. He was pretty much one man offense for the Cowboys until they traded him in the blockbuster deal to the Minnesota Vikings which basically turned the Cowboys around.

Once Walker was gone my favorite player on the Cowboys became Troy Aikman. Aikman was a good QB and lead the Cowboys to 3 Superbowl victories. Unfortunately a back injury and concussions would end his career early. After Aikman left Jason Witten was the player I chose as my next favorite player. He was a reliable tight end for their offense and became a deadly red zone receiver. Now that he has left for another team I am thinking Michael Gallup might be stepping up as my favorite Dallas Cowboy.

What is your Favorite Sports Player Apparel to Wear?

Dallas Cowboys NFL

There are hundreds of items to wear, use, or just to show off your favorite team or favorite athlete. I have different apparel and items for different teams. I have many shirts and jerseys for my various favorite teams and players. Other items that I also have are items such as BBQ equipment, Christmas decorations, autographed memorabilia, and sports equipment. My favorite player apparel items to wear are Jerseys. I like them because you can wear them anytime and anywhere. It is a form of bringing the fans together.

Have You Ever Not Wanted to Wear Your Team or Athlete Apparel?

I love to go to a sporting event and wear my team’s apparel. However, there have been a few times that I did not feel comfortable wearing it. It is easy to wear your teams gear when you are in their home stadium, but when you venture out to see them somewhere else things can get a little dicey.

Sports fans fighting

I have been in some rival teams stadiums where people were mocked, yelled at, and chanted at for wearing the other teams gear. Most of the time it is all in good fun. Unfortunately I have also witnessed times when people had their apparel ruined. I have seen fights break out and people had their hats, shirts, and even jerseys destroyed.

I always had a jersey for the home crowd and a separate one that I would wear at an away game. The items that I would wear at an away game were usually cheaper versions. I wore these because I did not want to get my expensive items ruined and if they did get ruined I would not care as much.

Where to find apparel?

There are many places to buy team and player apparel. With the use of the internet there are thousands of sites that are selling products some with high quality and some with very poor quality. I find most of my stuff on Amazon.com. There are thousands of items to choose from ranging in price and quality. You will find whatever it is you are looking for to meet your fan apparel needs. Take a look around and see all the different items for yourself.

When Will Sports Return?

When the corona virus hit the world of sports came to an abrupt end. Obviously no one expected this to hit and impact the world as it did. One of the biggest questions is when will the sports world return. There are people on both sides of this question. There are those who think sports should not come back until there is a solid solution to the virus. Then there are those who think they should start to play in some capacity, that being in front of no crowd or with a limited crowd to start.

This has impacted the lively hood of many people and not just the athletes. All the workers such as vendors, ticket sales, merchandising ground crews and many more. So obviously they would like sports to come back sooner than later. Even gambling sites and the casinos are hurting since sports not being played.

What sports are playing now?

We have had some sports make a comeback in some capacity.

The UFC has been back at it for a few months now. They started back up on May 9th.

NASCAR returned on May 17th and they have been running races without any crowd attendance.

The Korean Baseball League returned on May 6th and has been televised here in the US.

Horse racing has started up and we recently saw the Belmont Stakes take place on June 20th. They also have the Kentucky Derby scheduled for September 5th and the Preakness Stakes scheduled for October 3rd.

Wrestling has not stopped during all of this. The WWE still shows their Raw, Smackdown, and NXT shows live on TV every week. AEW (All Elite Wrestling) is also still performing their weekly show as well. Although they do not have any fans in the seats yet they are still performing business as usual. It does lose some of its appeal with the empty seats, but for now we will take what we can get.

What Sports Will be Starting Soon?

NBA Knicks

There are many sports where if all goes well will be starting very soon. Some of these sports are:

The Indianapolis 500 was originally scheduled for May 24th, but has a rescheduled date of August 23rd. They will have on-track action with practice sessions on Wednesday and Thursday, Aug. 12-13. Fast Friday will be on Aug. 14 and then the Indianapolis 500 Qualifications will be on Saturday and Sunday Aug. 15-16. The rest of their races are scheduled through September.

The NBA have agreed on a 22 team playoff format. The scheduled dates are: Training camp: June 30, July 7 travel to Orlando, 2019-20 season: begins July 31 the regular season will be a 16 days with 5 to 6 games per day. The NBA Finals format expected to include games every other day during best-of-seven series.

Some precautions they are looking to take include:

– The players need to be tested every night

– The League is stressing to players that they must remain in Orlando in the bubble.

– They aren’t going to track players, they are going to trust the players to stay within the confines of the Disney World campus. Their goal is to keep everyone in a safe atmosphere.

The MLS owners and players agreed to return in July for a 26-team tournament, but will not have any fans in attendance. Teams that can train in their own market at this point will likely be allowed to conduct full-team training in their home market before traveling to Orlando in early July. Those teams that are located in cities where that is not possible to conduct full-team training will travel to Orlando earlier to train before the games.

The NHL announced a 24 team playoff format to finish up their season that will start no early than July. The 24-team playoff would feature the top 12 teams in each conference, with the remaining teams entering the draft lottery. The league is viewing the play-in qualifying games as a “special set of games” and not the actual playoffs. The also will be tracking the players heath before games.

Tennis canceled Wimbledon but has rescheduled the French Open to September 20-October 4. The US Open is scheduled to open on time August 31st.

Sports That Have no Return Date or Will Not be Returning Soon.

There are also several sports that have not set a return time yet.

College Football does not have any set date to return, but they have also not put a delay on the start of the fall season. In mid-April, conference commissioners told Vice President Mike Pence there would be no college football until campuses are allowed to open back up. There have been some rumors circulating that there will be no D1 sports until 2021. They will asses the situation as it gets closer to the season.

NFL has been very optimistic that they will have their training camps go off without a problem this summer which starts in a bout a month and a half. The NFL is at an advantage given the fact that they are the latest sport to start giving them the most time to make the proper preparations. The bigger situation is that they are trying to figure out the financial cut that both sides could be hit with.

The 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics have been postponed until July 23 – August 8th 2021. They were originally scheduled to start July 24th 2020. They will still be held in Tokyo.

Breaking News – MLB

MLB has been affected the most by this pandemic. It disrupted the start of the season and every day that passes it is looking like they will not play this year until today! Players are set report for another version of “spring” training on July 1, and the league’s imposed 60-game season will start either July 23 or 24, the league announced. The exact schedule still needs to be made, but every team will play 40 games against divisional foes. Teams need to submit a 60-player rosters for big-league spring training, the list is due to the league office by Sunday at 3 p.m. ET,

MLB will have at least two rule changes this season. One rule is a universal DH meaning pitchers will no longer hit in the National league. Rule two is that a base runner will be placed on second at the start of every half-inning in extras. MLB will have a trade deadline this year after all. Instead of falling on July 31, it’ll will be on August 31st.

MLB will have a COVID-19-specific inactive list that players will be placed on if and when they test positive or show symptoms. There will be no set amount of time for the player to sit out, unlike the injured list, which requires hitters to miss at least 10 days.

In The End

Sports will make a comeback and we are seeing many sports playing and planning as we speak. They are trying to find ways that are going to keep their players, employees, and eventually fans safe and healthy. For now, I would like to just turn on the TV and watch my favorite sports play.

Youth Soccer

Soccer stadium

As most of you already know Football or soccer as it is known here in America is the most popular sport in the world. It is estimated to have around over half the world’s population is a fan. Soccer has been researched and it has been believed to be created over 2,000 years ago in ancient China and there is also evidence that a form of it was played in Greece, Rome, and Egypt. Soccer is now played in over 200 countries

My personal experience playing soccer

Growing up I was never a fan of soccer. I always saw it as a sport that was mainly running around and kicking a ball into a giant net. My friends and I would play it out on the school grounds during recess. There was no real structure to it, it was usually just 40 kids running around chasing whoever had the ball until someone scored. It was fun for us there was not a lot of skill to it.

I did try playing soccer for one fall season and I did not like it. I had played baseball the previous two years and I loved to run around so I figured I would try something different. I was 7 years old it must have been one of the worst fall seasons. Every day that I had a game it seemed to be below 40 and rainy that combination did not make it an enjoyable experience. So, I stuck to baseball in the spring and summer and basketball in the fall especially since it was indoors.

How did I start to like soccer?

I got into soccer over the past few years. This was mainly because my oldest son started playing. He started playing soccer like most kids I imagine. This is by joining the town league. He initially wanted to play because his friends were playing. From the first day on he has not stopped. As he got older he was starting to try out for more challenging teams playing in morecompetitive leagues. Youth Soccer

When he started playing in these higher levels this is where I really started enjoying soccer and started to get more and more involved in the sport. When I saw the amount of work and training that was involved at a higher level I really started to gain a better appreciation for the sport. I really started to see the importance of having the right coach or trainer. The time and practice that the players need to put into the sport is huge. I started to see that it is more than just running fast and kicking the ball. There is a lot of skill that needs to be out on that field in order to be successful.

I always saw soccer as a player oriented sport, meaning that there was not much coaching going on. It is not a sport like baseball, American football, or even basketball where the players are looking to the coaches for guidance and set plays. Soccer is more of a sport where the players are out on the field and it is up to them to take control of the game as it goes on.

Soccer and Covid-19

Due to this pandemic that has recently occurred unfortunately all sports came to an abrupt end. Many kids did not get to finish their school sport seasons and “careers”. My son was extremely disappointed that he and his teammates were not able to play their spring season.

Soccer Field

Youth soccer is trying to make a comeback this summer, but with some guidelines to be put in place. Some of these protocols for general hygiene and safety protocols from the Eastern Pennsylvania Youth soccer website are:

  • Wash your hands frequently
  • Have hand sanitizer available for all at times
  • No sharing of water, snacks or equipment
  • No shaking hands, high fives, fist bump, etc…
  • Social distancing = six (6) feet apart
  • No player or coach can attend if they are feeling sick
  • Sick players or coaches must quarantine as required by CDC/PA Dept. of Health. Can only return with a Doctor’s approval. Must show notice to the club.
  • Disinfect all training equipment- cones, goals, flags etc. Only coaches can touch or move equipment.
  • Coaches to wear a face mask as per CDC/PA Dept. of Health at all times.
  • Players to wear face mask when not involved in soccer activities or on the bench. Player may wear mask during activity at parents or players discretion.
  • Scrimmage vests washed after every session. Should consider it personal equipment, and provide each player with their own.
  • Each ball sanitized before/after every practice or game.
  • Only one coach may attend to an injured player. Must wear mask and gloves.
  • Minimize contact with other teams before, during and after each session

Phases For Returning to Play

Yellow and Green Phase

They also have a yellow phase and a green phase for coaches and parents. During the yellow phase they are allowed to have virtual training only. They are not allowed to have any organized play of any kind.

During the Green phase coaches must inquire how their players are feeling. If they are ill or appear to be ill, they must send them home. They must have a medical kit or bag with gloves, extra masks, sanitizer, and facial tissues. Social distancing must be adhered to at all times. Each player and their equipment at least six (6) feet from the next player. Coaches wear masks at all times and players may wear masks during training at their discretion They must be worn when not engaged in soccer activity. Only coaches may touch or move equipment not players or parents. Bodily contact in training must be avoided. Coaches must sanitize all equipment after training, and scrimmage vests are not recommended. They must minimize interaction with other teams that train before or after you. Players should go directly to their cars.

Soccer Equipment

The Green phase for parents consists of the following. Before sending him or her to training parents must make sure their children show no signs of COVID-19 for the past 14 days and no known exposure. Sick players and coaches must stay at home and follow appropriate health guidelines. It is up to the parents to determine if they want their child to wear a face mask during training. Parents must make sure to sanitize and wash all equipment and uniforms after training. They must also pack hand sanitizer and a face mask in his or her bag. Parents and other spectators are not essential to training and not recommended attending. For younger players this may be necessary, if so they must comply with social distancing and mask directives. Parents should speak with their children to never share water, snacks or equipment. Parents must notify club and coach should your child becomes ill. During games if a ball goes off touchline or end line allow players or coach to retrieve the ball. Ultimately it is up to the parent on the decision to allow their children to participate.

Final Thoughts

Soccer (Football) has been around for thousands of years and is stronger than ever. If you have never watched it or never really gave it a chance I suggest that you do. You will find that it is a great team sport and can unite people especially during the world cup or Olympics. I only hope that children are able to get back on the fields as soon as possible and be able to play the sport which they love.

Soccer fans

What is your favorite sport? and why?

All throughout history people wanted to be entertained. In ancient Rome people would attend the Colosseum and watch gladiator fights, and fights against wild animals. They would also go to the Circus Maximus and watch chariot races. In ancient Greece people would watch plays and listen to poetry. In the middle ages they would watch tournaments where knights and soldiers would battle each other infighting, archery, and jousting tournaments. Kings and noblemen would have Jesters perform for them.

Now people often turn to entertainment in the form of but not limited to books, T.V. shows, movies, music, YouTube, video games, even sports. One of the biggest of these platforms for people have been sports. Sports have been around for thousands of years

How did you get into sports?

Baseball Little league

I am from New York and we have a very strong sports affiliation in all the four major sports. We also host other sports such as The NYCFC soccer team, the US Open in August, and the PGA at Bethpage and Shinnecock on Long Island. The opportunity to go and physically see a game or watch one on TV is highly accessible.

I got into sports mainly because of my father. The first sport that I was interested in probably like many others was baseball. I remember as a little kid going outside and having a catch and hitting a ball off of a tee. I played baseball from then until the end of high school.

Other sports that I got into playing and watching other sports such as basketball and hockey. I was not influenced by my dad but mostly by friends and watching on television. I got into hockey in the mid eighties. My cousins were Islander fans and the Islanders at that time were winning year after year. However, despite this I  grew up to be a Rangers fan.

I have gotten into soccer over the past few years. This is mainly due to my son playing soccer. It is very easy to get into a sport when you have a personal interest in it. Soccer was never a big sport when I was growing up. It has definitely gained momentum in the more recent years.

What sport is your favorite?

When someone asks me what is your favorite sport it is not a simple answer. The reason being there are sports that are my favorite based on different reasons. My favorite sports consist of different reasons such as favorite to watch or play or go to.

My favorite sport to go to is hockey. There is nothing like going to see a hockey game live. Watching it on TV doesn’t do the sport any justice. The energy in the crowd is amazing. With all their chants, singing, and cheering is like non other. The speed at which the players are skating and the speed of the puck gets lost on the television as well. There is nothing like hearing the checking against the boards echoing throughout the arena. Going to a playoff hockey just amplifies the energy.

My favorite sport to watch on TV when I was younger it was baseball however the game has gotten dragged out so much that it is hard to watch at times. Football is now my favorite sport to watch on TV. I have always enjoyed watching football think football has become my favorite because of the emergence of fantasy sports. I find myself watching games that I usually would not care about, and rooting for players on teams that I dislike. It is more than likely that I am not the only one who feels this way.

Are there any sports you don’t like?

There are many people that do not like sports at all and that is perfectly fine. Many people find out from an early age if they like sports or not. Some people start off not liking sports then as they get older they wind up loving them and vice versa. There are many reasons as to why some people do not like a certain sport. These can range from not understanding the game to maybe they had a bad experience playing it.

I really do not have any sports that I hate. There are however, many sports that I do not like to watch. I find it very hard to watch golf and tennis. I have been to live matches and they are just OK to me. When these sports are on TV I find them very hard to watch. I do enjoy going out and play a round of golf. Tennis on the other hand I am not big on playing.

If you could play any sport professionally what would it be?

New York Yankees

There are numerous sports that I wanted to play professionally when I was a child. The one sport I would to have loved to play professionally is baseball. Like I said earlier it was my first sports played and it took me all the way through High school. I would have loved to been able to take it further.

I would have loved to play for the New York Yankees. Having been to many games and feeling the energy inside the stadium as a fan was unbelievable I could only imagine how it is to be a player in that atmosphere. It would have been a dream come true to do something I loved and especially for a team that I loved since I was a kid.

The importance of sports

I think since sports have been eliminated during this pandemic people are feeling the effects. Sports have been proven to have many positive effects on people. They are a way of keeping active, relieving stress, keeping busy, or even as a distraction. Its great for bonding with others I know this was a great way for my dad and I to spend time together. I also have the same with my own children. It is a form of exercise both playing and watching. Sports have also shown that it makes people smarter. When you are watching a sport or playing you are always trying to figure out your opponents next move. This works certain parts of your brain and helps you to comprehend information better and faster. Sports are great at helping kids deal with victory and defeat.

The History of Sports – Neolithic to Modern day

Sports have been around for a thousand of years. There is some neolithic age artwork proving this. In the Lascaux caves in France there were cave paintings found believed to be about 15,000 years old. These drawings are believed to be showing humans wrestling and running. Around 10,000 B.C.E there was paintings showing Egyptians wrestling and an early form of archery. There were also another set of cave paintings in Mongolia showing a wrestling match dating back to around 7,000 B.C.E.

What were some first documented sports?

The Olympics held in ancient Greece were the first documented sports. The first one taking place in 776 B.C.E. In these games there was only one event which was a footrace. These games held early on were only to honor the god Zeus. As time went on more sports were added to the Olympics. Around 700 B.C.E. along with the foot race they had discus, javelin, wrestling, and the long jump. Around 680 B.C.E. boxing and chariot racing were added. In these game sit was only the male citizens of Greece who were permitted to participate married women were not even allowed to spectate.

It is believed that in China during the Han dynasty as far back as around 5,000 B.C.E. there was an early form of football (Soccer) being played. This early form of football was called Tsu-Chu which means “kick ball”. Players were able to use parts of their bodies but not their hands. They also had to score by kicking the ball through a hole in a net. There are other items that show that other sports were played in China around 2,500 B.C.E. such as gymnastics.

During the middle ages there was an emergence of some new types of sports. Most of the sports of this time were rough, dangerous, and violent. Unlike the religious meaning behind the original Olympics games the games during the middle ages were more of a way to increase fighting skills among the knights and soldiers. Most of their sporting events were set around festivals. People from all over would come and watch these events. Some more popular events were archery and the joust.

Some other sports played during this time period was Horseshoes which was very similar to today’s version, Hammer throw, Shinty similar to today’s field hockey, Colf an ancestor to today’s golf, and Skittles an early form of our 10 pin bowling.

When did modern day sports come about?

The first modern Olympics were held in 1896 in Athens, Greece. They had around 280 participants from 13 nations still all males. There were now 43 events some included were track and field, gymnastics, tennis, weightlifting, shooting, and fencing among many others.

Most of our modern day team sports have been traced back mainly to Britain. Many of these sports came about because of the Gambling Act of 1664. The main sports that were backed by gambling were Cricket, Boxing, and Horse racing.

Cricket was a sport that was originated in the south-eastern region of England in the later part of the 16th century. In the early half of the 1700’s cricket was established as London’s leading sport. By the 18th century it was introduced in other parts of the world.

The modern game of baseball was created in 1845. The New York Knickerbocker baseball club created the first rules and regulations that became the accepted standard for the modern game of baseball. The Knickerbockers played their first game against a cricket team in 1846. In 1887 softball was invented as a from of indoor baseball.

American football was derived from the sports rugby and soccer. In 1869 players from Princeton and Rutgers held the first intercollegiate football contest in New Jersey. It was considered a soccer-rugby style game. Walter Camp, is known as the “Father of American Football.” He was most responsible for the transition from this rugby-like game to the sport of football we know today. In November 1892, a Pittsburgh Athletic Club, AAA player name William (Pudge) Heffelfinger was paid $500 to participate in the game, making him the first-ever professional football player.

Women and sports in ancient times?

Women competing in sporting events was always looked down upon. There is evidence from drawings and other art work that women in ancient civilizations competed in some forms of sports. There existed women athletes in Greek, Egyptian, and Minoan civilizations. Carvings on tombs, art, and paintings in Egypt provide proof that women were involved in swimming and also ballgames which seemed to resemble a form of soccer.

In Greece, the city of Sparta which was a militarist state was known to have girls and women engage in racing, discus, wrestling, and javelin. They had the women engage in these activities because they felt in order for the women to have strong children they needed to be strong themselves. They were also expected to be able to defend themselves as well as their homeland.

Women in Modern Day Sports?

Women's Soccer

Between the 16th century to 19th century sports such as golf, croquet, and archery were accepted as appropriate sports for women in the upper class. This was mainly because it did not involve physical contact or large amounts of physical exertion. Women also became active in cricket. There are documented case of women playing in Sussex. They were also starting to play trapball, an early version of baseball in the 18th century.

During the late 19th century and early 20th century there was a huge change for women in sports. In this period professional sports became what most people associate with today. During this time women were starting to compete in tennis, bowling, and rowing, and cycling.

In 1924, the Games were held in Paris. With about 3,000 athletes there were more than 100 women among them from 44 nations. Unfortunately, the international press rarely covered women’s sports and non-white athletes were pretty much ignored. At the 2016 Rio Olympics there were women competing from every continent. There was an increase in girls’ and women’s participation in sports influenced by the women’s rights and feminist movements of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Now women athletes and women’s sports spectating is at an all time high.

Sports over the course of history have undergone many transformations. There have been various improvements in technology which make the game more exciting, safer, and able to be seen around the world. The increase of women athletes has dramatically changed the culture of both fans and athletes. Sports will continue to change when the need calls for it. Hopefully we don’t lose any of the fun and excitement.

About Greg

Hello everyone, welcome to My Favorite Athlete Apparel website. Sports has been a passion of mine my entire life. I love to play, go to sporting events, wear my teams attire and even more so the attire of My Favorite Athlete.

I am from New York and sports are a big deal and we have numerous high profile sports teams. It is unique here in that we have two teams for each sport with each one having their own huge and unique fan base. It creates a really good fun rivalry between the fans. Even though there are these high profile sports teams not everyone here is a New York fan myself included.

How I got into sports

I got into sports at a young age mainly because of my dad as I’m sure that is the case with most individuals. My dad was and still is big into sports, most of all the New York Yankees. I started out like most boys my age playing T-ball then moving up the ranks through high school.

Baseball was not the only sport that I played. I also played organized basketball and Dek and roller hockey. These sports were more influenced by my cousins and friends. I wanted to play football but due to my smaller size at a young age my parents were not big on the idea. At the time I was not happy but looking back it was probably for the best.

I created this site to bring sports fans together. I want fans to be able to express themselves in a fun atmosphere. They should have fun going back and forth with each other with friendly banter. Sports have shown to provide people with a sense of belonging and for many they see their team as a “family”. It is a good way for people to meet others who share the same interest and passion while not necessarily agreeing on teams and players.

The purpose of my site is to be able to have sports fans find the best quality apparel to show off their favorite teams and players. There are too many sites out there that promise the best quality and ridiculously low prices. Knowing what we know today it’s very hard to get both. I am trying to supply shoppers with a happy medium.

I have purchased many sports apparel over the years. Some have been long lasting and others were ruined after only a few times being worn. I understand that everyone’s budget is different and that why I want to connect individuals with items that they can afford and will not be a waste of their hard-earned money.

If you ever need a hand or have any questions, feel free to leave them below and I will be more than happy to help you out.

All the best,
